ABOUT THE ABSTRACT PAINTING SERIES, MINIMAL

This series of contemporary abstract paintings are mixedmedia/acrylic/stucco/concrete on paper, birch panels and canvas.

I have always had a fascination with old building surfaces, weathered concrete, stone, and aged paint. There is a story being told in these surfaces – of history, the passing of time and limitations we all relate to as our understanding of our own mortality.

There is a feeling of warmth, familiarity, and comfort in these surfaces. There is a natural beauty revealed that is independent of our influence as caretakers of these structures, and weather and time causes change.

So many modern and contemporary artists are drawn to this visual emotion as revealed in the works of Richard Diebernkorn, Marcia Myers, and many more. For me “texture” speaks volumes towards creating these feelings in my abstract paintings. I have developed textural techniques over years of exploring these visual effects.
As a contemporary abstract artist, I realize I am in the business of creating “illusions”. In the minimal series I let the layers of paint and texture tell my story and convey these feelings of time-created surfaces that we all seem to relate to.
